The role of digital control in aircraft is becoming progressively more important. Advances in microelectronics have allowed control systems to influence aerodynamic design in order to give improved performance and manoeuvrability. A total redefinition of aircraft dynamics becomes possible with a full-authority Flight Control System (FCS). Features that are desirable in many control systems are essential in aircraft. Power consumption, cooling requirements, volume and weight must all be kept to a minimum. System failure implies the catastrophic loss of an aircraft and possibly of life. Hence, a major emphasis rests on FCS integrity, i.e. the amount of 'faith' that can be placed in the system, however complex, once designed. This paper introduces some of the problems of high integrity flight control and summarises the technology standards needed to match the demanding operational requirements of modern aircraft.
