The use of EHF for Military Satellite Communications can offer a number of important benefits to the military user, and is currently on the threshold of considerable exploitation and technological development. The band 43.5 - 45.5 GHz has been adopted for satellite uplinks, with downlinks at 20.2 - 21.2 GHz. The bulk of military Satcoms currently operates at SHF in the 8/7 GHz bands, with limited use of the UHF band (225 - 400 MHz). Capacity at SHF is becoming limited, exacerbated by demands for close orbital spacing within the geostationary arc, while UHF has major drawbacks. The primary benefit of EHF for military satellite communications is not simple capacity however, but the ability to provide survivable communications. Here survivability means maintaining communication in the face of enemy threats.
