Battlefield Damage Assessment and Repair (BDAR) firing trials involving joint US Forces and those of the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) were held in Meppen, Germany during the period of 16 April to 7 May 1986. The trials were concluded sussessfully, accomplishing all objectives. Seven US test firings involved the positioning of four target vehicles (M109A3 SP Howitzer, M113A1 APC, M813A1 5.0 Ton Truck and an M35A2 2.5 Ton Truck) at various distances around statistically detonated 155 mm projectiles. After each firing, technical data on damaged components was recorded; this was followed by BDAR procedures. The BDAR repair methods, repair times, manpower, tools and supplies used and repair levels were documented. All critical damages sustained to the target vehicles in these trials were repaired effectively using BDAR techniques and expedient repair materials. Most repairs were accomplished by the Unit Level maintenance team. The ability and confidence of the repair personnel increased as the firings progressed. The most significant repair procedures involved welding, brazing and soldering. Vulnerability of critical components, such as tires, radiators, batteries, fuel tanks, and engine and accessories became evident.
