With the increasing need for maintenance-free and enery saving features, AC traction drives have been developed for revenue service. Important requirements for electrical equipment of railcars in particular, are light weight and compact size. This paper analyzes the torque control method which effectively coordinates the inverter and induction motor in terms of these requirements. Newly developed technology such as asynchronous PWM pulse-width modulation control by the inverter to attain smooth starting from a reverse running position and a wide range three pulse modulation system to permit smooth voltage control are described. Finally, the paper introduces system control equipment using 16-bit microprocessors which can be flexibly applied to various specifications with high precision and non-adjustment control.
