This paper provides a survey and assessment of pertinent techniques for data fusion, including Bayesian, Classical, Dempster-Shafer, Entropy, Optimum Estimation, Figure of Merit, Templating, Fuzzy Set Theory, Clustering techniques and Expert Systems. The paper includes tables which provide descriptions of the basic attributes of these techniques, viz., the fundamental or kernel process involved, characteristics of the required input and of the output, and key assumptions associated with the use of each technique. The paper summarizes each of these attributes and provides assessments of the utility of each technique for processing single and multiple sensor data. Tables are also included which relate the techniques to the single source types. A summary and discussion is also provided identifying prototype and established fusion systems which employ each of the specific techniques as well as the associated application categories.
