This paper discusses the degradation of phase-noise of high frequency quartz crystal oscillators under vibration. This degradation in phase noise limits the performance of coherent radar systems. The output of the crystal oscillators under vibration is characterised by vibrational sensitivity of the quartz crystal resonators and is independent of the oscillator circuit configuration. A comprehensive real time vibrational sensitivity measuring system has been developed to evaluate the crystal resonators under vibration in three mutually perpendicular planes, in order to determine the optimum crystal resonator design for minimum vibrational sensitivity. Factors affecting vibrational sensitivity of the quartz crystal resonators will be outlined. The vibrational sensitivity investigation carried out on a number of different types of AT and SC-Cut devices will be discussed.
