The first Italian State Railway diesel electric locomotive (F.S. D145 S.1000) equipped with impressed voltage inverter and asynchronous traction motors (FIAT was the main contractor) was put into service in 1981. This paper presents: i) the structure of the locomotive, which is able to perform both line and shunt service and which was designed to insure high reliability and low operating costs; ii) the problems that arose during the designing and testing of the electrical equipment, iii) the equivalent circuit adopted for the asynchronous motor performance calculations, iv) experimental results pertaining to the motor (losses and peak inductance) which show the limits of present knowledge.
