On September 26th 1986 the Secretary of State for Transport laubched a discussion document entitled 'Autoguide - a Better Way To Go?' The document summarised developments in the field of vehicle navigation and electronic route guidance devices, in particular work during the last decade at the Transport and Road Research Laboratory (TRRL). It presented issues for discussion on whether or not there was a viable case for progressing to an infrastructure-supported real time route guidance system in Britain, Autoguide, with London as the starting point. This paper describes the background to the issue of the discussion document, summarises the results of comments received during the discussion period against the more technical issues raised in the document, and presents the work currently in hand which might lead to possible next steps.
