Laser vision mapping allows the generation of maps in a form suitable for storage in some form of electronic medium. Digital mapping has been carried out over the last 8-10 years but the expense and time taken is prohibitive to the rapid growth of electronic route guidance projects. Some American manufacturers have carried out useful work relating to in-car navigation where a digitising process has been evolved in a form highly suitable for in-car map-matching and at much lower costs than our UK Ordnance Survey processes.
