Navigation implies knowledge of position and course and thus covers both vehicle location and route guidance - the joint topics of the colloquium which this paper introduces. The paper outlines the techniques which can be used to locate, vehicles and considers, in the light of recent trends, how they are employed in a range of navigation aids: from simple directional aids through to fully automatic route guidance systems.
