This introductory section provides some background to the DRIVE Planning Exercise, and the work that was carried out for it. The objective of DRIVE (Dedicated Road Safety Systems and Intelligent Vehicles in Europe) was to assess if Information and Telecommunication Technology could make a major contribution to the improvement of road safety, the main emphasis being on the private motorist. Four expert studies were carried out as part of the Planning Exercise: - On-board Safety Systems - Consultronique (F) - Vehicle Guidance and Communication - Blaupunkt (FRG) - Urban Traffic Control for Road Safety - GEC TA (UK) - Motorway Traffic Control for Road Safety - Autostrade (I).
