The application of electronics to vehicle navigation and location systems is producing an ever wider selection of equipment, relying on sensors in the vehicle, external systems, beacons and roadside data communications. This paper considers the benefits of the self contained vehicle location or navigation unit. It is shown how such a unit can form a useful base for many integrated systems. Techniques are described which enable a dead reckoning location unit to be integrated with map data to form a reliable and error free location unit needing no operator intervention.
