EMP testing of two Fast Patrol Boats (FPB) was carried out in 1982. One of the FPB's was old and had a simple EMC protection. The other was comparatively new with an extensive EMC protection. A transmission line simulator was erected over the vessels. It was confirmed by the test that sea water could be used as the lower plate (ground plane). The objectives of the test were to map EMP fields exterior and interior to the hull and to measure the levels of voltage and current induced in major cable connections. After these measurements had been comleted, functional check-out of all mission critical electrical and electronic systems should be carried out during EMP illumination. Any failures in system performance should be recorded and damaged parts or components identified. Finally the required protective measures should be specified based on the result of testing.
