This paper reviews the conventional methods of 'limited KVA' starting and compares them to the application of a Variable Frequency Drive method. The use of this relatively new application is described with reference to an actual installation. The economics of the method are explored to provide some guidelines for future applications. Any installation of reduced KVA starting should consider all the proven techniques which are available at the time. The system design must meet the constraints placed upon it by the power system serving the installation as well as the operating criteria imposed by the organization which must operate and maintain the installed starting system. The system design has the greatest impact on the initial cost as well as the ability to meet all the design objectives in an efficient and timely fashion.
