Optimum anode compositions have been identified and fabrication routes established and significant progress has been made in the tolerance of impurities found in smelter grades of aluminium. Activities in the programme are now focussed on battery engineering using the present 'state of the art' anode and cathode technology and multi-cell stacks of both alkaline and saline electrolyte batteries are in prototype production. This is the critical phase of aluminium/air battery development programme and will determine whether this promising technology can be translated into viable battery systems. The presentation will concentrate on recent advances made in the development of aluminium/air batteries and will include examples of both near term products and battery systems suitable for medium scale power applications in the 1 kW, 30 V range.
