Eagle-Picher has developed, produced and qualified a nickel-cadmium space battery which offers approximately twice the cell capacity of the previous high capacity systems. This 22 cell, 100 Ah battery design is characterized by light weight construction innovations which achieved a 44 % mass savings over two (2) each previous 22 cell, 50 ampere-hour battery designs. The battery design is further characterized by a high reliability design and manufacturing process under which original design goals were successfully validated via extensive life cycle and dynamic testing.
