The nation's electrical power companies are rapidly converting their power systems to various levels of automatic operation. Computer based, supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) systems are commercially available which permit the partial, and often complete, automatic switching and monitoring of substation equipment related to the transmission and distribution of electrical power to residences and industry. The commercially available systems have an abundance of special features and adequate memory to permit the power system engineers to monitor and control their substations and circuits in a fairly sophisticated manner from their engineering offices. This paper provides a description of some of the special applications of the SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) equipment being applied by power company engineers. Some of these applications and techniques may be of interest to the space power systems automation community.
