An autonomous power system test bed has been developed for testing and evaluating autonomous control functions for spacecraft power systems. This paper is an update of a 3-year effort. The test bed architecture includes an expert system to manage the power system, a control system to operate the power system, and specific hardware control functions to protect the power system against catastrophic conditions. A fault network is incorporated into the test bed for testing the expert system and control system responses to specific failure modes. Expert system functions include load management, energy storage management, maintenance management, fault prediction/prevention, fault diagnosis, and fault recovery. Control system functions include command and data processing, status checking, charge control, fault detection, and safe haven. The power system has a 2800 watt capability with six solar array segments, four nickel cadmium batteries, various control elements, and 20 loads ranging from 50 watts to 600 watts, including constant power, constant current, and resistive pads. Experience to data has led us to believe that a sophisticated autonomous control system can be developed with state-of-the-art programming capabilities.
