In the coming decade, as subsea completions become the only cost effective solution due to the exploitation of deeper and more remote waters, demand for higher accuracy positioning will confine the choice to satellite positioning (GPS or initially Transit) and subsea acoustics. GPS will, of course, be invaluable in initial location, but, of the two, acoustics offers by far the most flexible approach to combine subsurface control and data acquisition.
