The development of autonomous spacecraft is underway. The operations currently performed on the ground by people and machines working together must be moved on board and performed by machines alone. The process of monitoring and controlling a spacecraft and our experience in the first attempts at automating it are described in this paper. Our design concepts and implementation progress to date are discussed.
