COLUMBUS is a European Program aiming to develop in cooperation with NASA a space infrastructure made of a polar platform, a laboratory module attached to US space station and a man-tended free flyer. This paper describes the design constraints applied to and the key features of the on-board Data Management System which will be spread over the space elements. Since this system is still under definition, the main architectural options are discussed also in this paper, amongst them: the local area network, the computers, the mass memory, the crew work station and the software.
