Studies performed at Rockwell International's Rocketdyne Division for NASA's Lewis Research Center (LeRC) found that the application of solar dynamic (SD) power to the IOC initial operating capability Space Station in a hybrid configuration combined the strengths of the two types of power generators at competitive IOC cost with substantial life cycle cost savings. Criteria used for evaluating reference concepts included cost and technology development status. A cost savings of over U.S. Dollar 3 billion was found for the hybrid concept. This saving included equipment, launch, and operations cost for the life cycle from the IOC of 75 kWe to the 300 kWe growth station. Technology needed to ensure the readiness of an SD system at IOC and the activities of Rocketdyne's team are reviewed. Test facilities and results of tests conducted are presented. Successful demonstration of the receiver/thermal storage coupled with the extensive hardware base in other portions of the system give confidence that solar dynamic power will be available for Space Station IOC.
