The progress in photovoltaics for space applications is reviewed especially from the point of view of GaAs based cells. The role of concentrator and multijunction cells in space panels and the need for sustained development of this technology are considered. An efficiency increase to 30 % AMO for the solar converter would have a major influence in reducing the weight and cost of photovoltaics. All these developments are required to failitate the technical feasibility of space missions such as the space station.
