This paper presents general equations for the performance of the long-stator LSM with the uncontrolled PM's mounted on the translator surface. These equations are derived from a phasor diagram. This diagram differs from most phasor diagrams in that the mechanical load angle x0 (the phase distance between the PM and stator MMF axes) is employed instead of the conventional electrical load angle. The theory is based on a new equivalent circuit whose parameter are directly derived from solving analytically field equations of the machine. For excitation region l(a) in one section of the active guideway, the no-load counter EMF EO is expressed as the phasor leading from a phasor of the corresponding phase current. The two reaction effects due to the stator flux linkaeg are represented by the reactance of armature reaction x(a) and the airgap leakage reactance xgl. For non-excitation region (l(i) - l(a)), the airgap leakage reactance is approximately calculated from letting the airgap length approach infinity. The formulas for EO, xa, xgl and xglo are developed in the analytical form, where all the machine design parameters are included and the effects of nonlinear magnetic saturation in both the stator and PM yokes are taken into account by means of a simple iteration method.
