This paper presents a brief summary of the design process for the Radarsat synthetic aperture radar system. Following a review of the principles of synthetic aperture radar imaging, the requirements for the Radarsat design are presented. A discussion of the philosophy used to attain desired system behaviour leads to a review of the design solutions. A number of design innovations necessary to satisfy the stringent requirements will be described.
