This paper is based on the premise that the Data Link will find it's proper application in the cockpit and at the controllers console by meeting some of the IMMEDIATE management needs of both ... In a user friendly fashion. The main topics are: transition to data link communication, cockpit and controller workload effects, and some data related programming considerations on third generation aircraft such as the B-767/757. I suggest that data link be implemented initially as an adjunct to the radiotelephone in order to remedy some of the radios' current problems. Two noteworthy radio problems are discussed: the expectation factor and radio prone ambiguities. The airport traffic information message, currently sent by radio is suggested as an excellent strategic application. My main point overall is that workload benefits from data link use will be directly related to the increased quality of communication realized by adding the speed, precision and large data handling capability of the data link to the flexibility of the radiotelephone.
