Using a single chip micro-computer, a leak detection system for gas pipeline is developed by N.K.K. (Nippon Kokan K.K.). The principle of leak detection is recognizing the occurence of leakage by sensing rarefaction pressure wave caused by leakage in the gas pipeline. Features of the system are high reliability and low cost. Based on the mathematical and experimental analysis of gas pipeline transient behaviour, a sensing method with efficient digital filter is devised. The experimental results of the application of the system in the model pipeline are presented.
