The prime customers of current integrated CNI avionics are the military services. The Air Force's perspective in particular is important for three reasons: the Air Force represents the lead service for its development, integrated CNI is the prime solution approach to many problems directly tied to future combat effectiveness and force planning, and integrated CNI avionics philosophies, design goals, and specific functions have been selected by the Air Force for concept demonstration of a number of ancillary ideas such as standard avionics modules, resource sharing, two-level maintenance, and a general integration of avionics that extend across weapon systems. In summary, the prospects and perspective of future integrated CNI systems are optimistic. This optimism is based on potential size and weight savings, increased reliability, reduced life cycle costs, enhanced supportability, and opportunities for new technology insertion. These all imply enhanced mission and combat effectiveness. If only a small amount of this potential is realized, it will be worth the price we've paid.
