Weather affects system capacity more than any other factor. Historically, weather accounts for about 68 percent of air traffic delays. Thunderstorms, snow, ice, fog low ceilings, and wind are the major factors resulting in air traffic problems and delays. Because of the importance of weather. National Weather Service (NWS) meteorologists are assigned to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Central Flow Control Facility (CFCF) and to 21 Air Route Traffic Control Centers (ARTCC), Center Weather Service Units (CWSU) to monitor the weather, provide briefings, and issue advisories.
