Space remote sensors are one of the areas of advanced technology particularly critical to NASA's future plans for space programs. It is very appropriate that such future sensor techniques should form a part of the 'Automation, Robotics, and Support Technology' panel's deliberations. The logical connection between remote sensors and automation or robotic systems becomes more apparent if we look at past uses that have been developed for remote sensors. This paper will explore some of the connections between these two fields and illustrate a number of the particular sensors which NASA expects to contribute in major ways to improving our ability to conduct remote sensing studies.
