Inserting VHSIC technology into ATE will help to reduce the size and weight of ATE systems and will allow future systems to be more portable than they are today. These size reductions will not occur in a single transition but will evolve with technology. It is estimated that, in five years, the multiple-bay system will be reduced to a single- or double-bay system; in 10 years, the one- or two-bay system will be reduced to portable size resembling an oversize suitcase. VHSIC will be a key element in future highly mobile support equipment. It will improve existing MATE system performance and will replace present MATE systems with technology that will make MATE systems perform even better. Large cost savings will be the eventual result, and over the long term, VHSIC will help to eliminate the I-level tester as systems move to on-aircraft and off-aircraft. MATE is constantly reviewing new means of technology insertion to aid its applications. If MATE is addressed in broad terms, as an acquisition process and a controlled interface, new technology will support it into the future, and its process will evolve to support better Air Force procurements.
