The maglev transport based on the electromagnetic suspension system is studied on its feasibility as an urban or regional transport mean in Japan. Social background of the need for such transportation system is explained from the urban structure and problems related to conventional transport means. The concept of a maglev transport is detailed for this type of application with medium capacity and medium velocity operation, the technical data of which is derived from HSST-03 system. Comparing with cases utilizing a conventional rail transport or the passenger transport through automobiles, features of the new system are discussed from various view points, such as right of way, operational safety, maintenance labour and transportation capacity.
