The recent rapid growth in the use of lasers in defence systems is but one aspect of current developments in military electro-optics. Notable laser applications are in rangefinding and target designation, where the narrow beamwidth, energy efficiency and semi-covertness are advantageous. Military platforms requiring laser warning receiver (LWR) systems include aircraft (fixed and rotary wing), ships and tanks. Timely detection of enemy laser activity, and characterisation in terms of the associated waepon system, offers the potential for implementing self-protective action (e.g. evasive manoeuvre and/or the deployment of a smokescreen) or counterfire.
