Maglev transportation systems are characterized by electromagnetic support and guidance technology, elevated guideways and linear motors. TRANSRAPID stands for high or super speed transportation 400 to 500 km/h using a synchronous iron-cored long-stator motor for propulsion and linear generators to supply the vehicle with the required power in a noncontacting manner. ULIMAS is a low to intermediate speed transportation system which uses a linear induction motor with U-shaped secondary (short-stator) fed by an inverter and D.C.-current pick-up to supply the vehicle with the power. Requirements for safety, reliability, availability as well as low investments and minimal operational costs are met by the developed modular structure of the electrical and mechanical subsystems. Their components are designed, making use of fail safe techniques and functional redundancy. Results of components and subsystems development as well as results of the performance analysis of vehicles and guideway will be presented.
