In recent years, levitated transportation systems have been studied in many countries. Most vehicles used for these systems are driven by linear motors and are levitated magnetically. As for the linear motors, two kinds, synchronous and induction type linear motors, are available today. They are used only for propulsion use usually, besides they may generate not only a thrust, but also a force with a direction at right angles to the thrust, in a certain kind of condition. In this paper, a generalized analytic model is proposed for the vertical type linear synchronous motors. Mathematical expressions are derived for calculating the thrust and levitation force characteristics of the motors, and the numerical calculated results on the characteristics are obtained, assuming various waveforms of magnetic flux distribution and armature coil current. As a result of the analysis, a possibility of using the force at right angles to the thrust, for suspension or guidance of vehicles, is shown.
