Space station design requirements for energy storage system options dictate long life (5-year) and high electrical efficiency. These two requirements have been the primary drivers for the NASA-sponsored fuel cell technology advancement program conducted with International Fuel Cells (IFC) (previously the Power Systems Division of United Technologies Corporation). Over the last four years, the program has focused upon the development of stable, corrosion-resistant cell components for application in Orbiter-type alkaline fuel cell stacks. Furthermore, the advanced components have contributed to a reduction in cell weight and have the potential to reduce cell cost. NASA plans to incorporate most or all of the improved technology components discussed in this paper into fuel cell stacks to be used in the Space Station program. All of the advanced technology fuel cell components have been incorporated into multicell stacks of up to six cells and tested at least 5.000 hours. Endurance testing of the Orbiter-size cell stacks has demonstrated long-term performance stability.
