BR are confident that static converters will give improvements in the following areas: - 1. Higher Reliability - typically 10 x improvement upon MA set figures. It is possible to design higher safety factors with electronics components without the penalty of cost and space 2. Lower maintenance - can be designed totally enclosed i.e. no moving parts or problems from dirt ingress. 3. Higher efficiency - typically 85-95 % compared with 60-70 % for MA set. Diagnostic Maintenance Aid and Fault logging. This is achieved by the use of microprocessor electronics, suitable interface and transmission system at no increase in system complexity. 5. Ability to change the operating strategy with the use of a programmable read only memory (EPROM). 6.Lower weight - approx. 2/3 rd the weight of a MA set. 7. Lower audible noise.
