The present-day practice of measuring car emissions requires complex gas analyzing devices with a great variety of analyzers and complex sampling systems. To improve this situation the development of a new instrument was initiated. The development, the special features and the basic physical principles of a special Fourier-Transform-Spectrometer (FTIR) instrument are described. An integrated mass flow rate measurement is based on the tracer gas dilution method. The new system allows real time multicomponent concentration and mass emission determination directly in the exhaust stream of cars. The FTIR principle allows the construction of an instrument without drift and cross sensitivity and with a stability over a long period of time. Calibration is needed only once a year.
