The use of embedded processors in military applications has been growing steadily over the past five years. Microprocessors - single-chip processors implemented in silicon - have been used extensively in the commercial sector and are starting to proliferate in military applications. To reduce the high costs of developing and maintaining software for these embedded systems, the D.O.D. has implemented several programs to introduce standardization. One effort is aimed at standardization of the processor that is used in an air-borne weapons systems.
