Too often the term 'embedded training' is applied to a military training situation with the assumption that some sort of magic will take place during equipment/system development which will answer the 'maiden's prayer' and solve a particular training problem. This paper addresses the fact that appropriate front end analysis, and not the use of mirrors, is mandatory to provide a reasonable chance of success in the use of embedded training techniques. The paper discusses the methodology which should be applied from the Navy standpoint to determine how embedded and shorebased training requirements can be established. The role of the Naval Training Systems Center as a Center of Excellence in simulation is also delineated in terms of working with hardware equipment designers concerned with embedded training.
