Since 1950, LSEV (Explosives Substances Laboratory of Verneuil) belonging to CERCHAR (Centre d'Etudes et Recherches de Charbonnages de France) is in charge of official testing of explosives for use in gassy or dusty coal mines. Working at LSEV, the authors first give a survey of the history and philosophy of permitted explosives in France. Then they describe the actual classification and testing methods of these explosives.
