Reducing the size, weight, power and cost and increasing the performance and reliability of digital hardware is always desired in military systems. In the past, integrated circuit technology could be used on high volume circuitry, but the sall quantities ften required in military systems prohibited its use. A new solution to this problem is the use of gate arrays. This paper describes the benefits that can be realized in military digital hardware with the use of VHSIC/VLSICs gate arrays. It shows jow VHSIC/VLSIC gate arrays make it possible to improve hardware by reducing size, weight, and power over board level designs without having to pay the high costs associated with standard cell and/or custom LSIC's. The typical step by step gate array design methodology is also presented. One design example included in this paper shows a 47 % size reduction, a 44 % power reduction and a 40 % increase in reliability. Cost comparisons are included with recommendations about the areas of best utilization of gate arrays.
