Current diagnostic techniques and tools require manual execution and interpretation of results. Because of the complexity of vehicle electronics systems, considerable skill is required to perform these manual functions. Artificial intelligence offers hope in automating much of the manual process and in improving the overall effectiveness of diagnostics. A hierarchical structure of vehicle electronics and on-board artificial intelligence automation is described. This structure begins with an artificial intelligence controller for built-in test and proceeds through higher levels to mission readiness assessment and crew interface. An off-board artificial intelligence system is also discussed. This system performs diagnostics in support of repair and interfaces with the on-board systems, automatic test equipment and maintenance technicians, in a paperless workstation envirionment.
