Boeing Military Airplane Company and Advanced Decision Systems have recently completed one of the DARPA and AFWAL sponsored Pilot's Associate Demonstration One contracts. The project developed limited prototypes for avionics expert systems. The primary system was a Crew Station Information Manager which operates on information from three supporting subsystems including a Situation Assessor, a Mission Planner and an Integration Controller. This paper describes the general architecture used for all of the expert systems and the specific knowledge representation and control reasoning techniques used to implement the Crew Station Information Manager. An overview of the project and a look ahead to future research directions are presented in a companion paper.
