Simultaneous efforts are being made by lampmakers to develop a new vehicle lamp with significantly higher efficacy than the existing ones. The development of a vehicle lamp with a ceramic discharge tube achieved by TUNGSRAM and optical tests performed on this new lamp are reported. This new vehicle lamp has been found - from the optical point of view - to be suitable for use in vehicle headlamps. In order to operate HPS automobile lamps, similarly to their approaches, expensive electronic ballasts must be developed. From the car headlamp perspective, the relatively long period required for lamp stabilization and restarting is also a problem. Whether these difficulties can or cannot be overcome, will be the deciding factor for the widespread use of this new lamp which has favorable optical and illuminating engineering features in car industry.
