In multiplex systems for automobiles, the aim of present development efforts is to simplify wiring, and thus save space and rationalize both the design and manufacture of the wiring. Hitachi's multiplex system deals with 400 electronic parts and their respective switching mechanisms within 40 ms by using custom communication LSIs in the central processor and peripheral interface. It maintains high reliability by both an error detection function for transmission and a fail-safe function should the signal transmission line be broken. We intend to adopt an optical fiber network for the microcomputer controlled system. Its main component is an optical/electrical converter, which we have made more compact by using bidirectional optical transmission with a single plastic fiber.
