This paper outlines the different types of simulation at the Maritime Simulation Centre (MSC). The MSC is a section of The College of Maritime Studies, which is situated at Warsash, on the mouth of the Hamble River, almost midway between the seaports of Portsmouth and Southampton. The Centre is staffed by eleven professional mariners, of both Deck and Engineering disciplines, who use simulation for both training and research. A more detailed description is given of the Machinery Space Simulator and the overall flexibility of the Centre's simulators are illustrated by giving practical examples of their use over the nine years of the Centre's operation.
