Speech recognition and synthesis are rapidly maturing as viable techniques. Given that idealised conversational machines are still a long way off, the question we need to ask is 'what tasks are compatible with, and could benefit from the application of, the limited technical wares which are likely to be available in the near future'? The paper is devoted to this question. The answers to this question depend as much on the characteristics of the application as they do on the merits of the technology.
