TEMPLAR, the U.S. Air Force Tactical Expert Mission Planner, is being developed by TRW for the Air Force Rome Air Development Center (RADC). TEMPLAR is the first major Air Force application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) technoLogy to produce an Advanced Development Model (ADM) of a decision aid which will be demonstrated by the operational forces. TEMPLAR will build on technologies demonstrated by RADC, the Mitre Corporation, and the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to incorporate natural language understanding, constraint and expert system-based planning, and advanced man-machine interface (MMI) techniques. The TEMPLAR ADM will assist Air Force mission planners in developing the Air Tasking Order (ATO) which defines targets, missions, aircraft assignments, weaponeering, and other data sent to the wings. The ADM will have near-operational functionality and packaging. During the development it will be demonstrated and evaluated at Blue Flag and AirLand Battle Management exercises, followed by delivery and installation in the RADC Battle Management Laboratory.
