Energy transfer and military requirements have led to a growing demand for measurement of the key radiometric properties of surfaces and for standards to check on the quality assurance procedures involved. Total spectral reflectance and the spectral diffuse and regular (specular) components are needed in their own right and also as the most efficient and accurate means of determining the spectral and total emissivities. Where the sample is not entirely opaque to IR radiation, the total hemispherical transmittance also needs to be measured, either in its own right or to complete the determination of emissivity.
